9 Top Foods For a Healthy Diet |

Many people who come to see me for Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss have already tried many different sorts of diets, some of them very extreme and almost starvation diets.
But as well as losing weight they often want to develop a healthy attitude towards food and exercise. They want to be able to eat healthily and enjoy their food. They also want to be able to have a treat every now and then without feeling guilty or feeling that it’s not worth carrying on with their diet because of one small treat.
So whilst I’m not a nutritionist (and I always make it clear to them that I’m not) – we do often end up talking about healthy eating and the options available to them to find out more.
We have all seen lots written over recent years about how healthy the Mediterranean Diet is for us – but what if we could pick the top 9 foods from that diet and base our wider diet around them? So here they are, courtesy of www.eatingwell.com
1. Broccoli Rabe – or indeed any dark leafy vegetable.
2. Chickpeas – provide lots of protein as well as calcium, iron and zinc.
3. Couscous – but remember to find interesting ways to cook this!
4. Aubergines – remember that wonderful moussaka you had on holiday.
5. Hazelnuts – another good source of protein and wonderful on salads.
6. Olive Oil – you knew it would be in the list, didn’t you?
7. Peppers – try all the different colours to add interest to your salads.
8. Prawns – more protein but also selenium and niacin.
9. Tomatoes – full of lycopene, a heart-protective antioxidant that may also help prevent some cancers (particularly prostate).
And the most important thing of all, I think, is variety and to enjoy your food. So whatever you choose to eat remember to slow down and really enjoy every mouthful, whether it’s a wonderful fresh healthy salad or a treat of a slice of cake. Talking of which it was my partner’s birthday this week … I’m off for a cup of tea and a slice of the leftover cake ….
