A Choice to Worry |
| Posted on Aug 04 2011 |
Now I believe that I am somewhat of an expert on worrying – I’ve been doing it for most of my life. It’s a “skill” that I learnt at a very young age because my Dad was also an expert worrier. In fact, he made it into something of an art form.
He could often be found sitting in his chair, staring off into the distance, perhaps biting a finger nail or his lip, deep into a bout of worrying. I can only guess what some of his worries were because I was too young to understand – but the atmosphere of doom and gloom that he gave off at those times was enough to scare me.
Indeed, sometimes he would just worry because that’s what he did. The standing joke in our house was that if Dad didn’t have anything to worry about he would worry about that until he found something.
And in spite of my Mum being more of an optimist and looking on the bright side, I certainly followed my Dad’s pattern of worrying for most of my life.
Thankfully I don’t anymore because at some point I realised I actually have a choice. Worrying is a choice of how to spend my time.
Worrying actually uses up a lot of mental energy that I now know can be used in much more productive ways. All of that energy going in “what if ….” and imagining the worse case scenarios can actually be more usefully used in coming up with positive scenarios and planning how to make them a reality.
And yes there are some things that are actually outside of my control – death being the big one. But simply recognising that it is outside of my control and doing something more positive instead of worrying about it has been a big release for me.
Now, I’m not saying that this miracle occurred suddenly, overnight. It does take practice, it did involve some difficult moments when I was trying to convince myself of the benefits of not worrying about something. But the good news is it does get easier with practice – until one day it can become just the way you are now.
