Achieving Your New Year Resolutions |
| Posted on Jan 04 2012 |
Welcome to my first blog of 2012 – and predictably I’m talking about New Year Resolutions!
Have you made some? Perhaps, like me, you prefer to think of it as setting goals. Do you have something you want to achieve this year?
It’s good to have goals – but it’s important to commit to achieving them and to plan how you are going to get there too.
It doesn’t matter what your goal is – stopping smoking, losing weight, learning how to manage stress better or relax more, here are some tips to help you along the way.
Be very clear about what you want to achieve:
State your goal in the present time and in the positive – as if it has already happened, eg I am fit and healthy, I am breathing easily, I am running 5km. Set a specific date when you want to have achieved it by.
A couple of times a day sit quietly, close your eyes and spend a few minutes thinking about what it will be like when you have achieved it. What will you see, hear or feel?
Be practical about how you are going to achieve it:
Plan! What resources do you have, what do you need. Do you need any help or support from your friends, family, a trainer, a nutritionist, your GP, a Cognitive Hypnotherapist? What actions are you going to take in the next week, month, 6 months to ensure you get there.
Also, think about and plan for the negatives. What might stop you getting there? How will you deal with it if it does occur? If you have planned how to overcome the obstacle it is less likely to stop you if and when it happens.
Be kind to yourself:
Follow your plan and celebrate your achievements along the way – no matter how small they might seem.
And if things go wrong for a while, just take a deep breath and start again. As someone I know often says – “just continue taking action and you will get there”.
Good Luck and a Happy 2012.
