Choosing The Life You Want |
| Posted on May 31 2011 |
There is a wonderful quote that I really like – although I’m not sure who it is from. “The only real choice we have is how we choose to react”.
With so much going on around us in the world today it is easy to feel our stress levels rising. It can start first thing in the morning as we watch or listen to the news – so many bad things going on, plus the possible financial problems of unemployment, pay cuts, losing our homes etc. Then we get to work and it can feel as if the expectations of our managers are growing more and more every day. Plus there are the stresses of cooking, cleaning, picking the kids up from school on time, refereeing their arguments. No wonder our stress and anxiety levels can sometimes feel out of control.
And yet how many of these things can we actually control? If you were to write down a list of everything that is stressing or worrying you today I would guess that every few of the actual events are within your control, particularly the big national or international events like a financial recession. Also, many of the “smaller” stresses and concerns are outside of our control. Can you actually control your boss’ mood on a Tuesday morning after the bank holiday? Can you control how fast the person in front of you is driving? What about if your partner has to stay a bit later at the office and can’t take your daughter to ballet?
In many cases the only thing you can control is your reaction. If your boss is in a bad mood you can choose to react in a bad mood yourself or to decide not to let it affect you and look forward to lunch time with your friend. If the person in front is driving slowly you can take the time to choose to enjoy a couple more songs on the radio. If you have to take your daughter to ballet instead of your partner that could be an opportunity to spend some time with your daughter and enjoy seeing how much she has learnt.
Now I’m not saying this is easy – I’m not a saint! But if you decide to try to focus on those things you can control it can become easier and easier to make it a habit – and your stress levels can begin to lower just a bit, which is always a good thing isn’t it?
