Christmas Stress! |
| Posted on Dec 14 2011 |
It’s funny isn’t it how a time of happiness and fun can seem so stressful and anxious?
I went Christmas shopping yesterday afternoon and the car parks and shops were full. So many people were rushing around, cramming presents and food in their bags, their faces looking anything but full of Christmas cheer. Many of them looked as if they would rather be anywhere else in the world.
And then there is the anxiety – will granny like the present? Will there be enough food on the day? Will dad behave himself and not tell his usual jokes again? Will anyone have an argument?
There seems to be so much to worry about. So in the spirit of actually enjoying this time of year and being kind to yourself here are my tips to help get you through the next couple of weeks:
Take Breaks: Don’t wait until it all becomes too much to bear, schedule in some breaks or breathing space for yourself. Promise yourself a 10 minute break with your favourite hot drink when you’ve finished in the next shop, look forward to a hot bubble bath in the evening, sit and listen to the next song on the radio before you get out of the car and carry on shopping. Whatever works for you is great – but do something regularly. Remember our bodies and minds can only work at peak performance for between 90 minutes and 2 hours before we need a short break. You’re not giving in to weakness but supporting your body’s natural rhythms!
Practice Breathing: Sounds silly but we have to remember to breathe … properly. When we are stressed or anxious our breathing becomes very shallow and short. We need to take the time to breathe deeply and slowly. There are many breathing techniques you can learn from books, the internet or a Cognitive Hypnotherapist if you are interested. But in its simplest form just focus on gradually and gently slowing and deepening each breath until you feel comfortable.
Change Your Scenery: Just a few minutes in a different place can help. If it all becomes too much for you pop on your coat and go and walk around the block or wander round your garden. And if you can’t do that close your eyes and imagine being somewhere safe and relaxing – really imagine how it looks, feels, smells, and what you can hear.
Treat Yourself: Remember to give yourself a treat sometimes - whatever works for you. A glass of champagne; a night out with your friends; the odd mince pie. Even if you are trying to lose weight the odd treat doesn’t mean the end of the world – just slow down and take the time to enjoy it.
I hope you are able to enjoy the next couple of weeks, but if you need any extra help with dealing with stress or anxiety contact me to find out more about Cognitive Hypnotherapy.
