Losing Weight Can Be Easy |
| Posted on Jun 14 2011 |
For many people the idea of losing weight can seem to take over their lives. I know from my own experience as I let it take over mine for many years. All I could think about was counting calories or fat, how much exercise I’d taken, was a particular food “good” or “bad”.
Now, I’m not saying it didn’t help me control my weight, but it certainly didn’t lead to a happy life. You can’t really enjoy a meal out with your family when you’re trying to calculate how many calories there are in each dish on the menu or working out how far you will have to jog tomorrow to work off a slice of strawberry cheesecake. Not to mention all those feelings of guilt when after a bad day at work I resorted to a couple of unscheduled and unplanned glasses of wine.
So what happened to change all of that? Well a couple of things actually. Firstly, I discovered hypnotherapy and realised that I didn’t have to continue to live with emotional links to food. A bad day doesn’t need to mean chocolate and wine anymore, I don’t have to react to any negative (or positive) event by dashing to the supermarket.
The other key thing which was part of that was building an actual enjoyment for food and exercise. You see in the past I had “good” food and “bad” food. The so called good food didn’t completely satisfy me and the bad food just made me feel guilty. Now I just have food, and I enjoy anything that I want to in moderation. And the great thing is that the more I experimented and tried new foods the more I found fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish that I enjoy and look forward to eating. But if I fancy a slice of cheesecake that’s OK too. The really important thing is taking the time to slow down and actually enjoy whatever it is that I’m choosing to eat – and to remember I don’t have to have a big plateful because I can always have some more later. All of this was built into a self hypnosis recording that I did for myself – something that I do for most of my clients too – to help my unconscious mind build new and positive patterns.
And exercise! Well, I found things that I actually enjoy doing. Yoga, Pilates and power walking work for me and I look forward to doing them. Also, something which is important to me – they are all things I can do on my own and for no (or minimal) cost. Don’t be afraid to try out lots of different things until you find what works for you – you never have to go back to a group more than once if you don’t enjoy it. Or start with DVDs or instructional videos on YouTube from the privacy of your own home.
