Motivation and Procrastination |

I’ve been preparing a presentation on Motivation this week ready for a networking group that I attend. Well, I haven’t really – but I should have been.
I have done everything else though in order to avoid doing it. My housework is up to date, as are all of my clients’ notes, and I’ve even cleared out the car.
Why do we do this? And what can we do to get past it?
Well there are various reasons why we avoid tasks. Sometimes we are frightened of them – of getting them wrong perhaps, or of what somebody else will say etc. Sometimes we just don’t know where or how to start. And sometimes we just don’t think the task is important.
I think that last point is key. Because if we don’t really value the task and it’s not important to us then we have nothing to motivate us to do it – especially if we are also a bit frightened and we don’t know where to start.
So the best place to start is by asking ourselves why we are doing it. What’s in it for me. What am I going to get in return for writing a good presentation. Well, I’m not going to feel silly when I stand up and just look at everyone – so that’s good enough motivation for me !
Once you know what is motivating you then you need to really build that image or feeling up in your mind. If your motivation for going to the gym is to fit in a size smaller trousers then spend time seeing yourself slim and attractive, imagine how it will feel to zip those trousers up and to feel so comfortable, hear the positive comments from your partner and friends … and then head off to the gym to make it a reality.
