New Year Resolutions

As it’s that time of year again I am thinking about New Year Resolutions and goals.  Personally, I prefer goals as it feels like I have something to work towards rather than something I am being deprived of now!

When you are thinking about goals there are a few really important things to keep in mind.

Firstly, you should phrase your goal as a positive, eg what you want rather than what you don’t want.  So if, for example, you want to eat healthily and lose weight it would be better to choose a goal to eat more fruit and vegetables rather than to stop eating chocolate.  Remember, your unconscious mind doesn’t do negative commands, so if you keep telling yourself you aren’t going to eat chocolate then your unconscious will focus on “eat chocolate” and that will be all that you can think about.

Next, you should think about your goals in the present tense – as if they are already happening.  So if your goal is to stop smoking – write it down and think of it as “I am a non-smoker” or “I don’t smoke”.  Avoid thinking of it as “trying to” or “aiming to” as your unconscious mind will respond better if there is no doubt.

Finally, focus on what positive benefits you will get as a result of achieving your goal.  Really consider how you will feel, what you will look like, what new behaviours you will be able to enjoy.  For example, if you are losing weight spend a few minutes each day thinking about how you will feel in your new clothes, seeing yourself looking in the mirror at your new shape etc.
