Positive Worrying |

Some of us just seem to be prone to worrying - thinking things through, over and over again and always to the worst possible scenario. I know I used to be really good at this. I used to joke that if I didn't have something to worry about then I would worry about that.
This form of worrying can really start to take over your life. Spending all of that time and energy thinking about the bad things that can happen uses an awful lot of time and energy. Also, it can begin to affect our sleep patterns too as we lie awake at night with negative thoughts going round and round in our heads - and we wake up early just to start again.
So how can we start to deal positively with these thoughts? There's a technique that I particularly like and use for myself called Positive Worrying.
Think about something that bothers, worries or frightens you. It might be an actual event coming up, such as an exam or an interview, or it might be one of those imaginary "what ifs".
Firstly spend a few moments thinking of the worst case scenario. You will probably find this really easy because that's what you do all the time already. But this time really make a conscious effort to think "what is the worst possible thing that could happen here".
Then spend a few moments thinking of the best possible scenario. Make this really good and build it up in your mind - maybe even follow it through with all the other good things that could happen as a result of it going well.
Finally, spend a few moments thinking of the likely scenario - what is actually likely to happen in reality.
You will find that not only doesn't it feel so scary anymore, but also because you've done something constructive rather than just going round in circles your unconscious mind will settle down and let go of it for a while. If you practice this regularly it becomes easier and easier and eventually your unconscious mind will begin to jump straight to the more positive scenarios.
And remember, if you are going to think about something in the future - you might as well think of it in a positive way - it doesn't use any more energy than the negative worrying and it's much more enjoyable!
