Staying Calm

Isn’t it strange that even though we now live in a world with so much technology and machines designed to make everyday tasks easier, we seem to spend so much time dashing around from one task to the next?

Each day can feel like a constant round of rushing – to get ready, to get out of the house, to get somewhere, to get back.  Even things that are supposed to be good for us like exercise can end up rushed or sandwiched in between other jobs – or we just give up on them altogether because we haven’t got the time.

Now all of these tasks might be really important to you.  After all we all have to earn money, we want to provide good food for our families, it’s important to phone your mum and your friends, the children have to get to school on time and go to other fun activities.  But the more stressful our lives become then the more impact there is on our health – mentally and physically.

Our minds and bodies evolved to deal with single, one off stresses that happened months or even years apart.  If we came out of our cave one morning and saw a sabre toothed tiger it was absolutely right for our mind to react to that danger in order to make it easier for our bodies to fight or run.  And then, after the danger had passed, we would be able to calm down quietly under a tree for a few hours – relaxing in the knowledge that we wouldn’t be in that position again for a while!

But unfortunately, our minds can’t tell the difference between a real danger like the tiger and an imagined danger like the consequences of us being late for work for the second time this week.  Our minds and bodies are reacting to “imagined” dangers virtually every second of every day and this can lead to anxiety, panic, depression and physical illnesses as our immune system struggles to cope with it all.

So here are some practical tips to help you deal with the modern world that we have to live in:

Take Regular Breaks.  Schedule short breaks into your day as you would any other event – and stick to them.  And when it is time to take your break get away from what you are doing for those 5 or 10 minutes – don’t just sit at your desk but walk away.  And don’t take your mobile phone with you!

Remember to Breath.  Sounds silly – “well if I forget I just die!” is something I often hear from clients when I suggest this.  But the more stressed we get the less efficiently we breath – we end up taking shorter breaths much higher in our chests.  Consciously practice taking deeper and slower breaths that allow the air to flow all the way down into the bottom of your lungs.

Meditate or Practice Self Hypnosis.  These can be combined with the previous 2 points – all you need is 5 or 10 minutes anytime or anywhere to get yourself into a state of relaxation.  They can also be combined with breathing techniques.  There are many books available to teach you how – or you can get help from a Cognitive Hypnotherapist to learn and practice.
