Stress and the Flu |

It's that time of year again - the clocks have gone back, the weather is getting wintrier, the Christmas ads have started on the TV, and the round of colds and flu has begun.
It's no coincidence that we get more minor illnesses as our stress levels rise. Perhaps you are already breaking out in a cold sweat at the thought of Christmas shopping or cooking Christmas lunch for all of your relatives and friends. Perhaps you work in an industry which gets busier and busier at this time of year and you are dreading each Monday morning as you prepare for work.
Our immune systems are very easily affected by periods of stress. Our bodies evolved to deal with very short bursts of stress, for example running away from or fighting a large wild animal. When we experience that burst of stress chemicals are released into our bodies to help us run away or fight - and once the danger is over the chemicals are "cleared away" by our immune systems. If our bodies are put under long term low level stress such as we all experience from time to time then the body doesn't have a chance to clear the chemicals away properly, our immune system is over worked and we are more susceptible to those minor illnesses.
