Top Foods for a Good Nights Sleep |
| Posted on Jun 30 2011 |
As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I often work with people who are having problems sleeping, and you won’t be surprised to know that we often work on relaxation, letting go of thoughts that are worrying them, self hypnosis, meditation, taking action etc.
But you might be surprised that we sometimes end up talking about food. Because according to some experts there are particular foods that help us relax and allow our sleep inducing hormones to flow.
There are a few general tips first before we look at particular types of food. Try to have your last snack 90 minutes or so before you go to bed – but keep it small, about 200 calories or so. No big fatty meals that are going to lie in your stomach making you feel uncomfortable.
So what type of foods should you include in your snack? Try the following ideas:
Bananas: Bananas contain serotonin which is one of the sleep inducing hormones – and also magnesium to help relax your muscles.
Warm Milk: Yes, I know this is one that your mum or grandmother would recommend. Part of the positive effect of warm milk might just be the link that your unconscious mind makes back with childhood and comfort. But also it contains tryptophan and calcium which together can act as a sedative.
Honey: We are often told that a lot of sugar is bad for us – and that’s true. But it’s thought that just a tiny amount of honey in your warm milk helps your brain to turn off something called orexin which may be linked to alertness.
Almonds: These contain tryptophan and magnesium. Remember just a small handful is enough.
Chamomile Tea: Chamomile is often drunk on its own – or included in other blends of herbal teas. It has a mild sedating effect and again may have a link in your unconscious mind with relaxing and letting go.
So if you are having trouble getting off to sleep, why not give some of these ideas a go? And if you would like a relaxing self hypnosis recording made especially for you give me a call to discuss your requirements.
