Weight Loss without Hunger |

I have recently been thinking a lot about food and weight loss. It started with me working with a friend for weight loss who responded really well to Cognitive Hypnotherapy. We dealt with her emotional issues and she learned how to manage cravings, serve smaller portions, make “healthier” food choices and stop worrying about wasting left over food.
But – in spite of all this the weight just wasn’t shifting at the speed we were both expecting.
I have also struggled with my own weight over the years – even after dealing with the emotional issues it felt like an on-going battle to control portion sizes and I think I just got used to a constant feeling of hunger.
So I became very curious – why? Why if I and my friend were calorie counting, controlling portion size, following “healthy” eating guidelines and exercising regularly – why was it still such a battle?
Firstly, I began looking at very low (or even no) carbohydrate diets – such as the Atkins and Dukan diets. I read a book called “The 4 Hour Body” by Timothy Ferris and cut out carbohydrates completely apart from on a weekly “treat” day – and the lbs just disappeared, almost before my eyes. Unfortunately, I was bored with the food and felt dizzy and light headed most of the time. So I stopped!
Then I read a fascinating book. “Why we get fat and what to do about it” by Gary Taubes, and it just seemed to make sense. I grew up during the 70’s and 80’s and we overweight children and teenagers were told that counting calories was everything. It didn’t matter if those calories came from apples or chocolate as long as we kept to a certain number each day – and back then the recommended amount was 1,000 calories. It was hard work but I learnt the calorific values of every food off by heart and I learnt how to survive on fruit and chocolate during the day because as long as I stuck to under 1,000 calories it didn’t matter.
What Gary Taubes explains in his book is that actually the types of food do matter and you can stick to low calorie diets but if the number of carbs you eat to make up those calories is too high your body will simply convert them to fat and even hold on to that fat. Revolutionary thinking for me – I could eat more food (even forbidden fats) and control my weight.
But it backed up the no carbohydrate diets and I’d already tried them and it wasn’t fun.
Then someone pointed me towards Patrick Holford and Low GL eating and it completely made sense and I also read “The GL Diet” by Nigel Denby. Not all carbs are bad – not all low calorie foods are good, and I can have fats in my diet (in fact good fats are necessary for health). And best of all I never feel hungry. I regularly start my day with a huge bowl of porridge made with milk and some fruit and before I know it, it is lunch time.
For the first time I feel as if I can forget about food and just enjoy it – and I haven’t weighed myself now for 4 months but my clothes are still comfortable (perhaps even a bit looser).
I introduced my friend to these ideas too and she is now enjoying her weight loss and feels as if all of the pieces of the jigsaw have come together. She feels good emotionally, she can deal with cravings, makes healthy food choices and never feels hungry.
If you would like to find out how Cognitive Hypnotherapy combined with healthy eating can help you lose weight contact me.
I would urge you to read Nigel Denby’s book, or anything by Patrick Holford for more info on low GL eating. But if you would like a free e-handout that I have pulled together with more details please send me an email.
