What would you do if you weren't afraid? |

I’ve just re-read a wonderful little book that I often recommend to my clients called “Who Moved My Cheese” by Dr Spencer Johnson.
It’s a simple little book that you can read in an hour or 2. The cheese of the title is a metaphor for what you want to have in life (maybe a job, relationship, health) – and the story helps you learn how to manage and even enjoy change.
There is a simple question on one of the pages that resonated with me today – “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” I love this question because it opens our unconscious minds to the possibilities and opportunities that exist for each of us.
I am facing a decision, whether to expand my Cognitive Hypnotherapy practice into a second venue, or to wait and see what other opportunities come up to expand later in the year. Part of me really wants to go for this opportunity and give it a go, but part of me is anxious just because it is different – a change.
I’m reminded of where I was a couple of years ago. I was holding down a full-time and stressful job in IT that I no longer wanted to be doing, whilst running a part-time Cognitive Hypnotherapy practice. I was unhappy during the day at work but there were obvious benefits to doing this – the money and security being just 2 of them. I was about to go on a driving holiday to Spain and I knew that what I really wanted to do was come back after the holiday, hand in my resignation, and focus on building a full time Hypnotherapy and Coaching practice. But I was really scared of the change.
One of the questions I asked myself frequently during that holiday was “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid”. And the answer was always – go for it. I knew that I had done all of the planning and preparation that it was possible to do – and that if I didn’t just go for it I would look back in the future and regret it.
So I did – and now I’m faced with going off on my holiday wondering about this new expansion and change in my business ….. what would I do if I wasn’t afraid?
