Is Anxiety and Stress Normal?
Experts say a little bit of stress or pressure is good for us. It’s what drives us on to get things done and achieve our goals and dreams. It is what keeps us alive and safe from danger.
You might have heard of the “Fight or Flight Response”. This is when our bodies react in a specific way to danger. Preparing us to run away from the danger or stay and fight it.
It is this chemical response which leads to those feelings you are familiar with. A racing pulse, your breathing becoming more rapid, palpitations, a feeling of butterflies in your tummy. This is an excellent response to real danger and one day it could save your life.
Anxiety – a “normal” response to a non-dangerous event!
But in today’s modern world our bodies are more likely to be responding in this way to everyday occurrences. Things like being late for work, worry about a family illness, having to speak in a meeting, not knowing how to do something at work. There are many different small stresses and worries every day and they all build up. Many of the things we worry about are happening at the moment. But we can also feel anxiety about things that have already happened, or we fear will happen in the future.
