Fear of Flying – how hypnotherapy can help
Do you have a fear of flying? In this article we look at simple steps you can take to help yourself. Also at how Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help you let go of the fear.
For most people a fear of flying doesn’t affect their day to day life. But it can certainly spoil your enjoyment. It can stop you from enjoying holidays with your family. It can stop you from travelling the world and having new experiences. You may even have a dream job that your fear of flying stops you from pursuing.
How does a fear of flying start?
In some ways it doesn’t really matter how your fear of flying started. Perhaps you had a bad experience. Or perhaps you watched a parent or relative suffering.
Either way you are filled with fear whenever you think about planes or even airports. You probably experience one or all of the following:
- Shortness of breath;
- Heart Palpitations;
- Stomach problems;
- Excessive sweating;
- Dry mouth, etc.
How can Cognitive Hypnotherapy help you?
A Cognitive Hypnotherapist will always work with you as an individual. So they will take the time to find out what has happened in the past. They will talk about the exact symptoms you experience as part of your fear. They will also ask you to imagine how you want to feel and behave when you have left your fear behind.
They will then choose specific techniques to use that help you to break those unhelpful connections and fears. These techniques will help you to think about flying in a positive way. You might even feel excitement as you begin to plan your next trip.
Alongside these techniques they will also teach you things you can practice yourself. Perhaps a special way of breathing you can use whenever you feel anxious or frightened. They may also give you a special individual hypnosis recording to listen to at home between your sessions.
What can you do for yourself?
You can practice any breathing techniques that your hypnotherapist teaches you. Here’s a really simple one to try now:
• Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing.
• Count how long you breathe in for – and how long you breathe out for.
• Adjust your breathing to make the out breath slightly longer than the in breath.
• After a while, when you feel comfortable, start to increase the length of both breaths.
• Continue to breathe in this way for as long as you want.
You can also take a few minutes each day to imagine yourself relaxing on a plane. Just a few minutes imagining the way you want things to be.
Make this as big and bright as you can in your imagination. See yourself laughing and having fun – or gazing out of the window day dreaming of an exotic beach.
The more you begin to focus on what you do want, the more your unconscious mind will help you achieve it.
