Hypnotherapy Supervision - the key to a successful practice

Hypnotherapy Supervision - the key to a successful practice

As a hypnotherapist I believe that hypnotherapy supervision is the key to building a successful and profitable practice.

I have enjoyed working with several good supervisors over the years. In the beginning when client numbers were low they advised me about marketing. As numbers grew they supported me in working with clients, and as I took on more challenging clients ensured my clients were safe and that I was looking after my own mental health.

I am an Accredited Supervisor with the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy), and I am proud to be able to support other hypnotherapists in this very important way.

I have 3 main aims as a supervisor:

  • To work with you to ensure you are always addressing the needs of your clients – and that you can do that in a safe and ethical way.
  • To help you to build and develop a successful hypnotherapy practice. We each have different needs and expectations from our practices – some of you may only want to see a couple of clients a week and others may want to build a full-time and busy practice. I will support you to meet your own individual goals.
  • To ensure that you recognise and support your own health and wellbeing. Many therapists suffer from burnout and good hypnotherapy supervision can help you to avoid this.

I offer hypnotherapy supervision within a solution focussed approach and will help you to identify your own strengths and resources as we work together. You will be able to reflect on what you are doing well, identify areas where you may want to make some changes, and share successes and improvements in a safe, non-judgemental forum.

Because every therapist is an individual, we will agree the appropriate duration and frequency of supervision to match your own circumstances and current workload. I recommend a minimum 30-minute slot for the maximum benefit but if you need a shorter or longer time slot I will charge for the actual time spent in the session - to the nearest 10 minutes.

I offer supervision via telephone, Skype or Zoom.

Why is hypnotherapy supervision important?

So, you’ve finished your hypnotherapy training and have your new diploma on your office wall. You have practised working with your fellow trainees, friends and family during your course and now you are excited about signing up your first paying client.

Or perhaps you feel nervous about that first session and are imagining all the reasons not to forge ahead with your goals.

You may have been waiting a few weeks for the phone to ring and nothing is happening.

All the above are possible scenarios and are perfectly normal.

You will have been told by your training school and your governing body that you must (or should) be in supervision but it is just another cost when you are starting out – isn’t it?

I think that it is an essential investment, and it will repay you over and over as your hypnotherapy career progresses. In my experience ALL successful hypnotherapists and coaches have prioritised supervision as an essential expense.

Firstly, our profession can be a lonely one. At the end of the day when your partner asks you, ‘did you have a good day?’ all you can say is ‘yes’ or ‘no’. We are bound by rules of confidentiality which mean that one of the only people you can talk freely to about your progress is your supervisor.

You also do want the phone to ring with potential new clients, even if the prospect is scary at first. A good supervisor has already built a successful practice and will be happy to share their experiences (good and bad) with you. They will help you to discover the best ways for you to market your practice using your own unique skills.

Most importantly you want your clients to be safe. Your clients will be very keen on this point too. Your supervisor can help you to choose the right techniques and what to do when you are not getting the results that you want. Also, if you ever get a client who is self-harming or suicidal your supervisor will be there to support you.

So, yes hypnotherapy supervision does cost money and take time out of your precious working day – but I believe it is well worth the investment. If you want to have a chat about working with me then get in touch and we can have a no obligation conversation.
