Professional Hypnotherapy – What to Expect
Professional hypnotherapy is very different to the hypnotherapy we see in films or on TV. It is certainly very different to stage hypnosis!
But if you have never had a course of professional hypnotherapy it can seem a scary idea. What exactly happens during your hypnotherapy sessions?
There are many different types of professional hypnotherapy. Even within each type of therapy every hypnotherapist will bring their own experience and background to their work. I am a Quest Institute Trained Cognitive Hypnotherapist so the following describes how I work.
The Free Initial Consultation
This is a short free consultation which takes place at my office in Colchester, on the phone or via Skype if you prefer. It is a chance to meet me and ask any questions you may have. I can also explain how I work. At the end of this conversation we can agree if my approach is right for you.
If you want to you can book your first session there and then. Or you may choose to go away and think about it. There is absolutely no obligation to commit to anything at this session.
The First Session
Before we start work I will ask you to complete some simple forms. These measure how you are feeling. They also ask you to describe the problem you want to work on and to rate how bad it is on a scale of one to 10.
During this first session we will spend some time talking. A little bit about where you are now and what has happened in the past. A lot about what you do want to achieve with hypnotherapy.
Because I work with everyone as an individual it is important that I understand all of this in your words. I will then use this information to build your unique treatment plan, and to write suggestion patterns to help guide you forwards.
The second part of the session is a chance for you to relax and close your eyes.
Although hypnotherapy actually starts from the beginning of our work together – we are already moving towards your goals. This is the part of the session that most people think of as “hypnosis”.
I will ask you to close your eyes and begin to talk to you about relaxing and feeling calm and peaceful. As you relax I start to talk to your unconscious mind using powerful suggestions. These suggestions consist of the things you asked me to help you with during the first part of the session. They are designed to guide and support you towards your goals. They aim to help you to make positive changes in the way you think, feel and in the actions you take.
The Second (and following) Session
Now there is no definitive answer to this.
Firstly I will ask you to complete the same forms about how you feel. And to rate your problem on a scale of 1 to 10. It is important that we are tracking your improvements as we progress forward.
But everyone is very different – and every treatment plan is different. So I will choose the right technique or group of techniques for you.
As you progress and make positive changes the techniques also change and develop.
I will always explain the techniques to you as we go along. And I will always ensure you are calm and ready to leave my office by the end of the session.
So no swinging pocket watches or staring into lights. But professional hypnotherapy is all about helping you to achieve your goals as quickly as is possible for you as an individual.
